How to Tell If You Have Raccoons Living in Your Attic (5 Clear Signs)

Raccoons are extremely smart animals, and once they find a warm attic to nest in, they won’t leave on their own. If you’ve been hearing strange noises or noticing new damage around your home, here are the top signs you may be dealing with a raccoon problem.

1. Heavy Scratching or Thumping Noises

Raccoons are much louder than squirrels or mice.
Most homeowners report:

  • Slow, heavy walking
  • Thumping
  • Occasional scratching
  • Activity mainly at night

If you’re hearing heavier footsteps after dark, it’s a major warning sign.

2. Torn or Damaged Roof Areas

Raccoons are strong and persistent. They often break in through:

  • Roof vents
  • Loose shingles
  • Soffits
  • Gable vents

If you notice torn wood, lifted shingles, or pushed-in vent covers, it’s worth getting checked.

3. Foul Odors or Strong Musky Smell

Raccoon urine has a very distinct odor.
If your attic or top-floor rooms have started to smell musty or sour, it may be from nesting activity.

4. Droppings Around the Home

Raccoon droppings are larger than those of cats, squirrels, or rats.
Finding droppings:

  • In your attic
  • Near entry holes
  • Along the side of your home

…is a strong indicator of raccoon activity.

5. Damaged Insulation

Raccoons love to burrow into insulation to create nesting areas.
If you’ve had an inspection or peeked into your attic and noticed ripped or flattened insulation, it’s time to act.

What to Do If You Think You Have Raccoons

The safest option is to call a professional wildlife trapping service.
Raccoons can be aggressive and carry diseases like rabies and roundworm.

A trained expert can:

  • Inspect your attic
  • Identify entry points
  • Humanely trap and remove the raccoon
  • Seal and secure your home to prevent future issues
